Why UTRGV?
I spent 12 years in the Air Force and upon separating, I knew I wanted to return to school. My wife is originally from Mercedes, TX. We met in Okinawa, Japan and wanted us and our kids to grow up around family.

What made you decide on your current major?
I chose Political Science with the goal of using it to make a change in this world.

What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
Once I’ve completed my undergraduate degree, I’ll be heading to grad school. My goal in life is to become a political theorist and researcher. Analyzing and interpreting political behavior is an important aspect of life although politics is a sensitive subject for some. The political is everywhere.

What do you like most about UTRGV?
Beyond the classes, I love my professors. They challenge me and encourage me to critically engage and analyze the world around me.

What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
Being a Vaquero means being part of a family and an institution that’s much bigger than all of us. There are so many offices and entities that support both campus communities and to guide us to be the best we can be.

What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
The university, my peers, and my professors have provided me with the understanding to promote the opportunity to discuss, passionately and respectfully, our differences and challenging our own beliefs, expectations, and opinions.

What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
Get involved with an organization; talk with your professors (i.e., go to their office hours); speak up in class by challenging your fears of being wrong; further your understanding of politics (we have a great curriculum and wonderful professors!); challenge your own opinions, perceptions, and beliefs by critically engaging with your classes; and finally, read more of what your love and/or are passionate about.
