Why UTRGV?
UTRGV offers an affordable education and a close-knit community, which is rarely experienced at big universities.

What made you decide on your current major?
Initially, I was majoring in Computer Science, but after my first year, I decided to change to Biomedical Science. I chose Biomedical Science because I became interested in it after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Living with diabetes has given me firsthand insight into the complexities of managing this chronic condition. I want to have a deeper understanding of how the endocrine system works, how technology has changed the lives of many diabetics, and how I can help others facing similar challenges.

What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
I want to become a Physician Assistant specializing in the field of endocrinology. I aim to be an inspiration for my fellow diabetics and other patients, proving that having a disease is not an impediment to making a change in the world.

What do you like most about UTRGV?
UTRGV has everything you see in bigger universities. Both campuses are unique, each one delivering a feeling of satisfaction and comfort to students. As a student, I like the closeness you get to have with your professors; along the way, they become advisors. Even though UTRGV can be considered a small school, you feel the spirit and experience of being in college due to the energy and dedication at each event.

What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
Being a Vaquero means making memories at the university—those good and bad moments that accompany you in your journey. It's about being that person who enjoys going to events on campus, performs their best in every class, and is part of the students who help UTRGV grow.

What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
UTRGV has become a home for me; it has provided me with many opportunities since I was a freshman. For example, I have been involved in groups such as TRIO Student Support Services and the Pre-PA Society, which have been part of who I have become today. TRIO exposed me to conferences where I presented to other students, I obtained an internship with a diabetic association thanks to the Pre-PA Society, and I became an ambassador for the BMED program. In addition to this, I cannot be more grateful for the job experiences UTRGV has provided me. I’m more than happy to be working with the Street Team. During my time here, I've had the chance to experience a livelier student life, develop my professional skills, and work in a wonderful environment alongside my coworkers, supervisors, and even other departments. It truly feels like the ideal job, offering everything a student could hope for.

What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
Study what you love, what ignites your passion, whether it brings moments of excitement, pride, success, or even frustration. Strive to be the person who can one day say, 'I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, and it has shaped me into the best version of myself.' Balancing your studies with enjoying college is the key to achieving lasting success.
