Family-Centered Model

The Family-Centered Theory of Change aims to transform institutional practices and policies (e.g., implementation of CESL 1101 as a required course for all STEM majors, revision of all introductory STEM courses with family-centered, culturally relevant and community-engaged pedagogy, changes to faculty hiring, teaching and learning evaluation, and tenure and promotion) that impact the degree attainment of STEM students served at UTRGV. The Family-Centered model addresses diversity, equity, and inclusion and aims to dismantle institutional deficit thinking (Valencia, 2010) policies and practices to better serve Latinx STEM students and families from the community (Aleman, Freire, McKinney & Delgado Bernal, 2017).
