Why UTRGV?
I decided to attend UTRGV not only due to its proximity to home, but also because of its culture. The university captures the welcoming nature of the Rio Grande Valley in its diversity and atmosphere. I knew I wanted to be surrounded by something familiar and it made easing into the college lifestyle much easier.

What made you decide on your current major?
In the beginning, my major was Environmental Science, but that changed at my orientation the moment I realized that I did not need to conform to the STEM fields that are most dramatically pushed. Instead, I chose to pursue a degree in Graphic Design because I realized that that was the real me; that I would be happier pursuing a degree I wanted, not what others expected me to want.

What do you like most about UTRGV?
All my classes have been at the Visual Arts Building off-campus. When I started working at the UTRGV Student Union as a graphic designer, I began to appreciate the campus itself - how well it is kept and the beautiful landscaping that I pass by every day on my walk to work.

What are some of your favorite study spots on campus?
I am off-campus at the Visual Arts Building most of the time. I enjoy doing my work at the computer labs that are accessible to us students.

What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
The word Vaquero itself makes me proud of my Hispanic roots and I am proud to bear that name.

What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
Through my studies at UTRGV, I began to realize my own potential. My degree puts me in very hands-on positions. I have learned to operate machinery and tools not seen anywhere other than art studios, I’ve learned centuries old techniques taught by the old masters, and I have felt the ache in my hands and exhaustion in my shoulders carrying and grinding down lithographic stones across the printmaking lab. UTRGV and the challenging courses I have been offered helped me find my path through self-discipline and hard work. It made me realize how much I can take and how much more I can achieve.

What are a few of your favorite books?
I don’t have an affection for reading, I am usually drawing, but informative texts on animals and biology pique my interest.

What’s in your playlist right now?
I listen to just about everything, but I find a certain comfort listening to my mother’s old Tejano on the drive to school.
