JSTEM Through The Years

JSTEM is an innovative summer research program offered by the Office of Engaged Scholarship and Learning at UTRGV. This program is an opportunity for secondary students to learn communication and STEM in an authentically situated research setting at UTRGV. The program began in 2016 and has served more than 200 students in the Rio Grande Valley. To date, there are 236 JSTEM alumni:

59% have enrolled at UTRGV. Average GPA of 2.96

18% are pursuing a STEM major at UTRGV
This year, 24 students from Harlingen CISD, La Joya ISD, and IDEA Public Schools conducted original research on several topics including:

Effects of music on brain cancer cells

Effects of glucose on breast cancer cells

Effects of glucose on telomere length in yeast cells

Corrosive properties of different acids on scrap metal

Marine bacteria’s effect on antibiotic resistance and control of microorganisms
