Student Perceptions of Community-Engaged Scholarship Courses: Developing a Sociolinguistic Corpus on the U.S.–Mexico Border

Community-based sociolinguistic corpora are collections of informal interviews with community members who comprise an important dataset in sociolinguistics. Although some scholars have involved students in developing sociolinguistic corpora, few studies have examined students’ perspectives on these projects. Furthermore, very few studies examine the perceptions of underrepresented college students who are themselves members of the surrounding community.

‘Structure’ behind people

“Structure,” an exhibit of paintings, photographs, sculptures and prints by studio art junior Sean Hughes, continues through Wednesday at the Rusteberg Art Gallery in Brownsville.
The exhibit is sponsored by the Engaged Scholarship and Learning Office and the Office of Student Success. Engaged Scholarship and Learning awarded Hughes a $2,000 scholarship to produce the exhibit. He was mentored by Carl Vestweber, a professor in the School of the Art and Design.
Hughes’ works were inspired by familiar spaces within the Valley, photography, screen printing, pop art and an alternative way to use different media and materials, said Jesmil Maldonado, director of all galleries at UTRGV.

‘Community and Vergüenza’

Samantha Segura, an English senior, was a finalist at the March 3 Capital of Texas Undergraduate Research Conference in Austin. Segura’s poster presentation on her research, “Community and Vergüenza: An Examination of Reproductive Justice Organizations in the RGV,” received one point short of a perfect score.
The conference is organized by undergraduates at the University of Texas at Austin. During the conference, students have eight minutes to exhibit their research through a PowerPoint or poster presentation to a panel of undergraduate judges.
Segura independently applied to the conference by searching online for interdisciplinary and undergraduate research presentation opportunities in Texas.

‘Valleyisms’: a conversation about masculinity, class and family

“Valleyisms,” an exhibit about class, masculinity, family and the Rio Grande Valley by UTRGV art senior Juan José Delgado, is on display in the UTRGV Visual Arts Building Gallery in Edinburg.
Delgado said the works depict the Valley from how he perceived it as a child and now.
The exhibit features paintings with mediums of acrylics and watercolors. The paintings range from personal emotional paintings, such as “Pepe Feeling Sad in the Truck,” to a self-portrait, “Forging of the Self,” and a series of miniature paintings that Delgado created from traveling throughout the Valley.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Office of Engaged Scholarship and Learning. Delgado, a native of Edinburg, said the idea for “Valleyisms” came from wanting to explore and research identity. With a minor in cultural anthropology, he said he started by looking at how cultures operate in a family function and how they perceive gender roles and masculinity.

UTRGV to host arts education conference

UTRGV will host its first ever ArtsEd Conference from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Tuesday in the University Ballroom on the Edinburg campus. The conference focuses on UTRGV students who are planning to become educators in the field of arts.
“The College of Fine Arts represents the School of Music, the Department of Dance, the Theatre Department and also visual arts and creative writing,” said David Sadlier, associate director of the Office of Engaged Scholarship & Learning. “So we have presentations and performances. … We are covering the entire college.”
In the spring semester, the university hosts the Engaged Scholar Symposium (ES2). Last year, the ArtsEd Conference was a part of ES2.

From code-switching to treating cancer: Students’ research projects take spotlight at Engaged Scholar Symposium

UTRGV will host the Engaged Scholar Symposium (ES2) today through Friday to celebrate National Undergraduate Research Week, Earth Week and National Volunteer Week with informative sessions and activities.
The celebration serves as a platform to prepare students for their professional careers. The series of events will take place virtually and in person on both campuses.
“So, our Engaged Scholar Symposium is a multidisciplinary gathering of undergraduate students, graduate students, as well as some faculty scholars,” said Estela De La Garza, program manager for the Office of Engaged Scholarship and Learning. “And so, really, it serves as a platform to prepare students to grow as emerging professionals.”
Angela Chapman, director of the Office of Engaged Scholarship and Learning and an associate professor of science education, said ES2 helps students show the results of their work.
“So this is our annual symposium to showcase undergraduate research, creative works and community engagement,” Chapman said. “We have been doing it for several years now. We usually have several hundred students who are able to show the results of the work that they are doing.”
