Undergraduate Research

You may be worried, asking yourself, "How do I get started with undergraduate research? It sounds so difficult." Have no fear! The research process is straightforward and easy to understand.

Undergraduate research is a critical component of the Engaged Scholarship and Learning Office's mission to promote active learning and community engagement. Through research projects, students have the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to real-world problems, develop critical thinking skills, and make meaningful contributions to their communities.

As an undergraduate researcher, you find an academic gap in knowledge and pose a question through specific disciplinary methods. After developing your methodology, you then put your research into practice! Once data is collected, you disseminate and present your learned knowledge with peers.

Research can seem daunting at first, but you don't have to do your research alone. Some of this research may be integrated into or stem from your coursework. Learn how to find a mentor who is committed to helping you succeed!

Now that you know what undergraduate research is and how to go about it, we challenge you to sign up for a workshop, connect with a mentor, apply for research funding, and present at a conference!

By conducting undergraduate research, you have the opportunity to gain experience, credibility, and feedback from your peers and faculty mentors. The Office of Engaged Scholarship & Learning hosts the Engaged Scholar Symposium, which celebrates undergraduate research, service learning projects, and creative works.
