Fitness and Wellness

Overview:
Responsible for directly supervising various UREC activities, including, but not limited to Sport Club competitions and practices, Outdoor Adventures programming, and open recreation.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for supervising a safe environment on the fitness floor.  

Major Duties
  • Assist and educate patrons on how to properly set up and utilize a wide variety of weight and cardio machines
  • Communicate and enforce policies and procedures.
  • Ensure there is not misuse or abuse of machines.
  • Provide proper spotting for weight room participants.
  • Assist with the marketing efforts of fitness/wellness programs.
  • Maintain assigned areas for cleanliness and patron safety.
  • Clean and maintain fitness equipment.
  • Monitor members/guest for any potential medical emergencies.
  • Provide customer service and communicate with participants and staff.
  • Assist with emergency situations and evacuations when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Must be a current student or a student pre-registered for the upcoming long semester (fall/spring, min. 12 hrs). Student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Kinesiology or health/wellness major; previous experience in a health and fitness environment.

Position Overview

Group Exercise Instructors are responsible for leading safe, fun, and effective group workout sessions. Instructor hours are dependent on class offerings and instructor availability

Major Duties
  • Plan, develop and instruct safe, fun and well-rounded exercise classes using approved exercise guidelines and principles.
  • Ensure safety of participants by understanding general signs and symptoms of physical exertion.
  • Provide exercise modifications to allow for a variety of fitness levels and abilities.
  • Ensure safety of participants by reporting any facility problems.
  • Advise participants on routine exercise questions.
  • Enforce policies and procedures in a fair, prudent and professional manner.
  • Provide customer service and communicates with staff and patrons.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.¿¿

Qualifications

Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 and be classified as a full-time student.

Notes/More Information:

Preferred

Previous experience in a health and fitness setting. Primary Group Exercise Certification or other fitness certifications are preferred. Major in Kinesiology, Dance or Health/Wellness field.

Major Duties
  • Assist individuals with setting appropriate lifestyle goals.
  • Create exercise prescriptions for members based on individual goals.
  • Administer tests assessing the five components of fitness.
  • Provide exercise modifications to allow for a variety of fitness levels and abilities.
  • Observe and instruct members for proper technique, body posture and movements for safety.
  • Council members on fitness, basic nutrition, and injury prevention.
  • Complete appropriate documentation on members’ progress.
  • Assist with any fitness programs and/or health fairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Must be a current student or a student pre-registered for the upcoming long semester (fall/spring, min. 12 hrs). Student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Preferred

Accredited personal training certification through ACSM, NASM, ACE, NSCA or AFAA. Experience in training clients; Kinesiology or health/wellness major.
