Data Storage and Computing

This is an overview of research use cases, including the need for data center Rackspace, assistance with OS and application configuration, research storage, virtual machines, and cloud services. Each use case is accompanied by a question and a list of prerequisites.

Research Uses Cases

Data Center Rackspace

Question: Does Central IT have sufficient Rackspace, network ports, cooling, and power to accommodate the needs of the upcoming 3-5 years?

Prerequisites:

  • Systems must be rack-mountable. 
  • The network must have SFP connections. 
  • No water source is needed for cooling. 

OS and Application Configuration

Question: Does Central IT have the expertise to configure supported OS and applications?  

Prerequisites: 

  • The OS must be supported by Central IT. 

Research Storage

Question: Does Central IT have available storage for research purposes?

Prerequisites:  

  • Storage must be accessible only via the on-campus network. 
  • Access is limited to UTRGV accounts. 
  • Storage availability is limited per department/research group. 

Virtual Machine

Question: Does Central IT have the capability to host virtual machines using a hypervisor?  

Prerequisites: 

  • HPC workloads are not supported. 
  • Access is limited to UTRGV accounts. 

Cloud Services

Question: Does Central IT have a preferred cloud service provider?  

Prerequisites:

  • Funding must be provided by the researcher.
