Hasta Siempre

My project is centered around Día De Los Muertos and advertises a festival for it. It is titled ‘Hasta Siempre’; translated from Spanish it means ‘until forever’. For the Latino community, death is not something to be mourned or feared, but rather celebrated, as it is a part of life. Hasta Siempre to me means that we will see those we lost when our life here ends, and we will be reunited with them forever in the afterlife. While my family and I never personally celebrated the holiday, I was drawn to it after the death of my grandfather in December of 2020. Initially I was devastated by the loss of him, but as time when onI thought that he would rather want us to celebrate his life and not mourn his death. As a tribute to him I decided to dedicate my Senior BFA project to him and honor him in this way. This is also dedicated to those who have lost someone they love.

For my exhibit, I wanted to make it colorful, taking the pretty and bright colors traditionally found in Día De Los Muertos festivities and making them a little more modern by saturating them. It is a celebration after all, and I wanted to convey that by making sure that all elements of the designs were fun and cheerful, while still honoring, respecting, and remembering those that we have lost.
