Artist Statement

As a child I was always fascinated with album and magazine covers. I loved how memorable an album cover could be and the vast variety of styles that incorporated illustrations, photography, and type. The mixture of art and typography working together inspired me to pursue graphic design. I wanted to not only learn about the history of graphic design, but to understand the relationship between illustration and type. Because of this, layout has been an important aspect of design to me and a big part of my work. Learning how to layout the elements of your design is crucial to your work. I spend a lot of time refining and perfecting a work until I feel that it is a successful piece. I strive to create a work of design that is well balanced and complementary to other elements such as the type. My work process includes spending a lot of time incorporating detail. Although I focus on detail, my work leans to be refined and simpler in nature. I like to incorporate illustrations in my design work along with bold typography. My work is a combination of simple minimalistic design pieces and detailed digital artwork. I often find myself inspired by editorial portrait photography as well as pop culture. Generally, I switch between apps to create my digital portraits by using by using Procreate and Adobe Illustrator. I really enjoy working on both apps, I use this method as well for creating illustrations and incorporate it into my design as well.
