Artist Statement

personal logoGraphic design is everywhere, and it goes unnoticed by many. Coincidentally, as a child, I have always been interested in typography, composition, magazine and album covers, and illustration. This interest came from my dad’s tattoos and growing up as a kid constantly going to tattoo parlors and spending hours watching an artisan do his work, as well as interacting with tattoo artists. My interest pushed me to appreciate and learn about art, composition, typography and led me into a path of many art courses as well as graphic design courses throughout my childhood. As I learned more about graphic design over past four years, I’ve gone to appreciate graphic design, not only has a skill and craftsman ship, but as an artistic form as well.

My personal goal with my work, is to create pieces that not only serve as functional pieces that effectually communicate its message, but also a work of art in of itself. My experience working with the UTRGV Health Affair’s marketing department has helped me develop this personal goal, as well as developed my skills. This includes developing my eye, learn how to create strong pieces, and has taught me how to be successful. Since my start of my experience here, my work process has involved doing research, creating several options, and working efficiently. This includes creating work that is comprehensible to the audience, working simple and minimalistic, and finally creating something that is enjoyable to view.

My work has been inspired by graphic designer’s such as Paula Scher, Michael Bierut, Saul Bass, and Malika Favre. Much like these designers, my work involves a lot of bold typography, and illustration. My work also follows the simple and minimalistic compositions.
