Artist Statement

personal logoHello, this is Emily Cavazos, here to tell you a little about myself and my artistic journey. Initially, I wanted to be a nurse. A common practice in my area is the intense emphasis from parents to their children to pursue careers that garner an abundance of wealth rather than ones that are spiritually fulfilling or simply put, careers that just make one happy. My freshman year of college was at a private university, and that was where I realized that nursing is not a career I wanted to pursue. While it is a noble profession, I am not a noble woman and I choose to prioritize my own contention in life. So, I transferred to UTRGV to not only be closer to my home, but to peruse an education in something that makes me happy-art. Namely Graphic Design and graphic communications since I’ve always wanted to be an animator due to my love of cartoons and animated movies and I found much of what I learned is integral into becoming an animator, such as all the computer programs I learned throughout my degree progress, as well as art and design skills in general. I hope to one day put what I’ve learned to telling important and inspiring stories through whatever medium I can.

In thinking of influences I’ve had in my career, I consistently go back to Jorge Gutierrez, a Mexican designer with a very distinct style inspired by his culture. He worked his way up from poster design, to character design, to animator, all the way up to show creator and movie director, having done the movie “The Book of Life. ”I can only hope to have a success story like his, but I know well enough that I have to work towards it with everything I’ve got. I’ve never been one to give up easily, although sometimes, I find that walking away from a moment and then coming back to what I was doing leads to moments of inspiration like nothing else. The internet is such a great tool, and I have so many resources at my finger tips to be able to learn things I might have been stuck on, and I know I will continue to use it to its full extent is solving future issues or snags I might have in the future.
