The UTRGV Center of Excellence in STEM Education has been involved in outreach events, and in providing professional development workshops to college students to prepare them in their academic and career paths. As such Center personnel have garnered several awards for their efforts in increasing STEM awareness and mentoring students and faculty.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – OCT. 27, 2023 – UTRGV endowed professor Dr. Cristina Villalobos has been awarded the 2024 M. Gweneth Humphreys Award by the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM).

She was selected “for her exceptional success in mentoring and its subsequent impact on the mathematical profession as a whole,” according to the AWM.

EDINBURG, TEXAS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley celebrated the 60th anniversary of the UTRGV H-E-B Planetarium with an event on the Edinburg campus to view the annular solar eclipse.

It was the first eclipse of its kind to be seen in North America since 2012, and UTRGV distributed special glasses to the public to be able to view it safely.

The event was held at the sundial on the Edinburg campus from around 10 a.m. to noon. The planetarium’s anniversary was held through 3 p.m.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS - Dr. Cristina Villalobos, a skillful Hispanic woman in the STEM field has achieved yet another accomplishment. Dr. Villalobos has been recognized as a fellow of the American Mathematical Society program (AMS). AMS recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – Dr. Cristina Villalobos, a Myles and Sylvia Aaronson Endowed professor in the  UTRGV School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences,  associate dean for the  College of Sciences, and founding director of the  Center of Excellence in STEM Education, has been awarded the  Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM).

The much-lauded professor was presented with the award – among many recognitions honoring her commitment and dedication to the STEM fields – during a virtual ceremony held August 3. The formal ceremony will take place at the White House at a later date.
