About Us

Mission

The Writing Center is dedicated to empowering student voices through their writing. Our mission is to offer students meaningful opportunities to engage authentically with feedback and the writing process.

Vision

We envision a campus-wide writing culture where students are confident and well-supported in their writing endeavors through a robust network of resources and guidance.

Core Values

Our work is guided by and fosters the following values in students: curiosity, collaboration, engagement, creativity, persistence, responsibility, flexibility, and reflection. These values collectively support students by building skills and attitudes that contribute to their overall success and confidence in writing.

To this end, the Writing Center seeks to:

  • Offer accessible writing assistance both online and in-person for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni.
  • Foster confidence in critical thinking, effective communication, and awareness of writing tools and technologies.
  • Provide feedback that is both rhetorically informed and targeted, addressing a range of concerns from content and structure to organization, source usage, and citation formatting.
  • Develop and support writing-related resources, initiatives, and workshops to encourage and enhance student writing across campus.

Writing Center Mascot

  • The “writes-alotl” is the cherished axolotl mascot of the Writing Center, bringing creativity and enthusiasm to our team.
  • Writes-alotls inspire students to embrace their unique writing voices and build the confidence needed to tackle writing challenges. They make special appearances at both Writing Centers—Axie in Edinburg and Archie in Brownsville—sharing their joy with everyone who visits.
  • Writes-alotls loves "swimming" through stacks of books and papers to find writing inspiration; they also love to celebrate student successes!
