Surplus

Food waste has become a huge topic of discussion lately as people working in the food industry are speaking out against having to throw away large amounts of food at the end of the workday. Having personal experience in this I have seen it happen firsthand, and by taking inspiration from different startups I have been compelled to create an app that helps reduce the amount of food waste in America. The app I have decided to create is called “Surplus”, which is meant to describe the excess of food that we produce and throw away. To briefly explain the app, it allows local restaurants to post listings of food that was made for the day but didn’t get sold. Surplus helps combat two different issues that we have faced for many years in not only America, but the world. These issues being food insecurity and global warming. It’s no doubt that the United States is a large contributor to both of these issues, so any effort to reduce this situation can become a great help.

My first project is an infographic which explains the reality of food waste in America. It lays out all the information needed to know about the contributions that food waste makes to the planet and to the people. My second project is an explanation of the surplus app itself. It shows the different screens and the functionality of the app. My third and final project are some packaging material that would be made for the Surplus services. There is a tote bag which ties in to the reduction of pollution, as well as a carry out container that local restaurants would be using when packaging the food for their surplus customers.

In conclusion, Surplus is a mobile app that will help reduce food insecurity and pollution in America by distributing the excess production of food in local restaurants.
