Te Lo Digo Por Tu Bien

Te Lo Digo Por Tu Bien is an oracle deck made for those of us who have grown up in the families of immigrant parents and know just how it is to ask for advice. Designed graphically and stylized to match Mexican traditional art and culture, this deck is a fun and interesting take on an oracle deck that is commonly used for divination and sometimes just for the fun of it. The exhibit consists as well of a specially designed journal, two posters, one to advertise and another for interpretations, as well as a hand thrown tortillero box and jarrito to set the scene. The cards draw from real life experiences and sayings that only Mexican moms are known to say and aims to relate to those of us who grew up hearing these things and miss being told what to do with all the “tenderness” of a mother. Like a sitdown breakfast or “sobremesa” with your mama when you feel completely lost, these cards were designed to deliver advice with the sucker punch that only a mama can give. The images on the cards were all inspired by the sayings and things that innately reminded me of Mexico and my childhood. Colors were pulled from traditional sarapes and house designs as well as a simple tile-like design on the cards themselves. In general, the project is meant to be a fun experience for those of us who miss the harsh words of our Mexican moms and want their advice to follow us even when we are not with them. With fun illustration and Spanish saying, these cards can be enjoyed and used by anyone with eyes and google translate. From the company named after a Loteria card tile, comes all the fun of Latine moms without the pressure...or maybe some of the pressure.
