Mental Health Counseling
UTRGV SOM students have access to several types of mental health counseling services. There is no preset limit to counseling sessions available for every UTRGV medical student. Based on your unique needs and goals, your SOM therapist will work with you to personalize your treatment plan including the duration/frequency of sessions. Individual, Group, or Couples counseling can usually last between 45-60 minutes and are scheduled weekly or bi-weekly.
Virtual counseling is also offered as a flexible and optional option for students. A HIPAA complaint, secure video conferencing platform will be used to make the hard work of therapy convenient &confidential. For appointment requests, please email the SOM therapists.

Services Offered for Couples Counseling Couples who are both 18 years of age and older may be eligible to receive relationship counseling if at least one partner is a UTRGV SOM student. Relationship concerns may include a wide range of issues such as:
- Adjusting to medical school demands in a relationship.
- Making decisions about readiness to make a commitment.
- Renegotiating expectations and roles
- Parenting conflicts
- Communication difficulties
- Managing a separation or divorce
Couple’s counseling helps partners recognize and resolve conflicts and improve their relationship. Through counseling, couples can make thoughtful decisions about rebuilding and strengthening their relationship, or parting ways. Relationship counseling is available for mixed-gender couples, same-sex couples, or roommates. Premarital, marital, and divorce counseling services are also available.
