Students are assigned a career advisor at the start of medical school. If you are unsure who your assigned advisor is or have any questions, please contact our office at cim@utrgv.edu for assistance.
- Every students' medical journey is different, but we have recommendations for each year.
- MS1's: Your adjustment to medical school, summer plans, your career assessment results, etc.
- MS2's: Curricular concerns, specialty choice, etc.
- MS3's: Exploring residency, decision-making strategy, preparing for residency application, etc.
- MS4's: Selecting programs, residency application, interviewing, the Match, etc.
- Academic advisors focus on providing medical students with professional guidance and educational resources to enhance their academic and professional experience. Academic services include tutoring services, test preparation, review sessions, etc.
- Career advisors offer advising about career exploration, help you clarify your goals and priorities, offer shadowing opportunities, and review the AAMC career advising resources. Often times students will seek a career advisor from the specialty they are interested in applying for.
- Faculty mentors serve as trusted advisors who provide guidance, support, and professional development throughout a student’s medical education. Faculty mentors offer insight into the profession, encourage reflective practice, and assist in making informed decisions about career pathways.
