Transfer Orientation
Who Needs Transfer Orientation?
- Students who transferred to UTRGV from another college or university have been admitted as a new transfer student.
What Happens if I Don't Sign Up?
- New Student Orientation is mandatory for transfer students.
- Option 1: Sign up for an in-person orientation and register for classes with an advisor the same day.
- Option 2: Schedule an appointment with an academic advisor and register for courses. Online orientation modules will be assigned to you before the start of classes.
When Can I Sign Up?
- Registration for Summer and Fall Orientation starts in mid-February.
- Registration for Spring Orientation starts in mid-October.
- Check the reservation system for available dates. If you can't see a date, it might be because it's full, reserved for specific groups, or not for your starting term.
Orientation Fee
- There's a $75 fee for New Student Orientation, which is non-refundable. Cancel at least 3 days before to avoid the fee. Call 956-882-4026 to cancel.
Signing Up
- To register for New Student Orientation, you need to be an admitted transfer student and have your UTRGV email activated. Click the sign-up link and use your UTRGV credentials.

Vaccine Information
- Students under 22 must show proof of a meningitis vaccine taken within the last five years.
- UTRGV offers a limited number of vaccines at each orientation, which will be charged to your student bill.
To sign up for New Student Orientation, you must have activated your UTRGV email address.

Pro Tip: To ensure a smooth and efficient advising experience, make sure to submit all necessary documents in advance, like TSI scores, meningitis vaccine proof, AP scores, or updated college transcripts. This helps to prevent any delays in your class registration process.

- Dive into the essentials of advising and class registration.
- If you haven't met with an academic advisor before orientation: You'll have a personalized meeting with an academic advisor on your chosen orientation date. They will guide you through your academic plan, discuss your graduation path, and assist with class registration.
- If you've already met with an academic advisor: An appointment won't be automatically scheduled for orientation day, but you can request to meet an advisor again.
Register for Classes
Registration is available online through ASSIST (Advanced Services for Student Information Supported by Technology).
You can log into myUTRGV with your UTRGV username and password and click on the ASSIST icon under the Applications area.
- Log into ASSIST via my.utrgv.edu with your username and password
- Locate section APPLICATIONS
- Click on ASSIST
- Click on Registration
- Click on Register/Drop Classes
- Select a Term
- Search for Class(es). This will give you different options regarding time, days, location, and professor.
- Choose the class you are interested in and click “Add” to place it in your schedule summary.
- Click on Submit to register for the class(es).
Schedule Planning is a new feature of Banner ASSIST that lets you build possible schedules before registration.
An advisor may approve plans and create plans for the student. When the student's registration access opens, the student can register more quickly by registering from their plans.
Orientation Dates
To attend registration, you must have:
- Attempted all sections of the TSI and provided TSI scores.
- Proof of meningitis vaccination.
- All other documents necessary to complete your academic file.

Academic Advising
- Review your approved transfer coursework.
- Understand your program of study.
- Identify courses for the upcoming term.
- Connect with academic resources.
- Address any questions or ideas you have about your education.
By the end of the session, you'll have a clear understanding of your educational goals and be ready to register for the upcoming term!
- Ensure your final and official transcripts are submitted to Undergraduate Admissions for evaluation after completing your current coursework.
- Submit your TSI assessment scores to Undergraduate Admissions for proper course placement.
- Schedule your advising session at least 24 hours in advance for proper preparation.
- Arrive at least 10 minutes early for your session to handle logistics. Late arrivals without notice may lead to session cancellation.
- Bring your UTRGV Student ID for record verification during check-in.
Cancel My New Student Orientation Date
Please refer to your orientation confirmation email for instructions on how to cancel. If you need assistance please call 956.882.4026 or email orientation@utrgv.edu.
Students who cancel their new student orientation reservation at least three days before the orientation event will not incur the $75 fee. Students who NO SHOW or CANCEL less than three days before the event will incur the $75 orientation fee.
If a student cancels their orientation in less than three days, the student will incur the $75 fee. Students may appeal the fee by completing an orientation fee appeals form.
Students who can register for class, but do not attend an in-person orientation, will be assessed the $75 New Student Orientation fee and will be provided directions on how to complete their New Student Orientation requirements.
