Why UTRGV?
I chose UTRGV because it was close to home, and I appreciated its small student-to-teacher ratio, which allowed me to build strong connections with my professors and grow academically. Additionally, I was drawn to UTRGV’s status as a growing research institution, as I have always been passionate about research and its impact.
What made you decide on your current major?
I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field, but it wasn’t until my last semester of undergrad that I discovered my passion for nutrition. I took a course called Introduction to Complementary Medicine, which explored how lifestyle choices influence health. I was especially drawn to the profound impact that diet has on overall well-being and disease prevention. This realization led me to pursue a deeper understanding of nutrition and its role in medicine, ultimately guiding me toward a career in dietetics. Now, as I work toward my master’s in dietetics, I am focused on integrating evidence-based nutrition into patient care to promote long-term health outcomes.
What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
I hope to become a physician and utilize my knowledge as a dietitian to better manage and prevent disease through clinical treatment and lifestyle interventions. My goal is to bridge the gap between medicine and nutrition, advocating for a more holistic approach to healthcare that places diet at the forefront of overall well-being.
What do you like most about UTRGV?
What I enjoy most about UTRGV is the sense of community the campus provides. I have taken classes on both campuses, and both have a welcoming, supportive environment from faculty and peers. UTRGV’s commitment to student success, diversity, and development has allowed me to learn, connect, and develop the skills to succeed both academically and professionally.
What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
Being a Vaquero means embracing resilience, community, and the drive to always make a change.
What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
UTRGV has helped me find research opportunities and connected me with mentors throughout my community to guide my academic and professional growth. Through UTRGV, I have had the opportunity to engage in community outreach, gain hands-on experience in my field, and strengthen my skills while reinforcing my passion for serving underserved communities.
What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
Even if it's scary, the worst they can say is no. Real growth happens when you step out of your comfort zone.
