Description: Foolish Things Coffee Co. is a family-owned coffee shop on Route 66 in downtown Tulsa. The design approach was to create organic and handdrawn illustrations and pair it with soft typography and a naturalistic color palette to give a sense of comfort and humanism to the overall design. The linework that is used throughout each design is a nod to downtown Tulsa’s grand art deco architecture. The Cheshire cat has many symbolic purposes, and the owners of Foolish Things have given it great meaning: “...[the logo]is reminiscent of what it means to be a fully bodied humanity, and we’re not there. You’re never going to see the fully bodied Cheshire cat in the logo, because there is always going to be work to be done.” In my redesign, I stayed true to the given meaning of this cat as it never fully appears in any version of the emblem, logotype, or icon. Additionally, the eye itself is stylized as a coffee bean, representing what Foolish Things is.
Typo Roma Identity Design by Jaime Kimball (Student)
Work Title: Typo Roma Identity Design
Entrant: Jaime Kimball (Student)
Instructor: Nick Mendoza
Institution: Oklahoma State University (OSU)
Technology: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
Description: Typo Roma is an International Conference on Typography and Design organized by ATypI Association. This conference identity is inspired by the Roman Forum. The font is bold, which represents the solid structure of the Roman Forum and the ruins that are found all over the city. The letters are arranged in a way that appear to be falling as did most of the Roman Forum. The letter forms are manipulated to represent the broken structures in the forum. The texture was added to represent the small chipping of stone that happens naturally over time. The secondary type was put on a path that aligned to the broken large letter forms to break the word. It was placed inside the large letter to help the viewer see what once was, like how one walks through the Roman Forum imagining ancient Rome a few millenniums ago.

Description: The project “Integrated Baptism” merges Eastern and Western cultural arts, a focal point of my recent creative pursuits. I blend tradition with contemporary and futuristic elements, combining fantasy, reality, classical aesthetics, and technology. Breaking free from cultural confines, I explore ancient and modern eras, crafting a new global visual language. Central to this series are classical sculptures from Eastern and Western traditions, symbolizing human civilization’s peak and cultural interplay. By merging 3D-scanned Greek and Buddhist statues, I create striking visual contrasts in a new narrative. These works delve into global multiculturalism’s conflicts and rejuvenation. Though not tied to a specific religion, I draw inspiration from religious tales like the Tower of Babel, Noah’s Ark, baptism, and reincarnation, fueling my artisticexploration.

Description: The work “Integrated Wishing Well” aims to embody the convergence and collision of Eastern and Western cultural arts, which have been central to my recent years of creation. Responding to tradition from a contemporary and futuristic perspective, I merge fantasy with reality, classical aesthetics with virtual technology and artificial intelligence. Breaking free from cultural boundaries, I unravel the temporal constraints of ancient and modern times, crafting a new visual language with a global perspective. Classical sculptures from Eastern and Western traditions serve as the creative foundation, representingthe pinnacle of human civilization and documenting intricate cultural relationships. By uniquely merging 3D-scanned ancient Greek and Buddhist statues, profound visual contrasts converge in a new context. These works bear the weight of history while exploring conflicts and regeneration in global multiculturalism. While I do not adhere to a specific religion, belief in the unseen world inspires me, drawing from religious narratives like the Tower of Babel, Noah’s Ark, the Last Supper, baptism, reincarnation, impermanence, pantheon, and wishing wells.

Using virtual simulation, we recreate these carvings, considering their imagery, symbolism, and materials. We focus on restoring Bodhisattva carvings, analyzing scriptures, and designing informational interfaces. With three scene levels and gamified interactions, users are immersed in a virtual story, enhancing appreciation of traditional Chinese aesthetics.
