Our Story

Rebranded in 2020, the Student Experience Internship (SEI) program, formerly known as Student Employment Initiative, was created through the Career Center in partnership between Student Success, Human Resources, Dean of Students, and Academic Advising. Since then, we have connected over 100+ students to over 50 departments. Every year, we strive to attract more applicants and increase participating colleges and departments, to continue to add value to the University community.


We believe that an internship can impact a student's professional future, as well as give departments a huge boost in talent and capacity.

 

TheStudent Experience Internship (SEI) Program mission is to create meaningful internship experiences on campus for our students. The SEI program will enhance student learning and aid in their personal and professional development while pursuing their undergraduate degree.

  • Students will develop and improve their leadership skills
  • Students will interact with faculty, staff and students of different backgrounds and acquire social cultural, and ethical development
  • Students will develop career and professional skills and be prepared for future workforce

The following requirements must be met to be an eligible department for participation in the Student Eexperience Internship (SEI) Program.   

  • Identify support staff and/or supervisor to take the following responsibilities:   
    1. Participate in consultation with internship coordinator for review of SEI program guidelines and requirements.
    2. Submit SEI position request (through Career Center website online form) for review and approval.
    3. Determine student eligibility for selected students.
    4. Complete student employment PAF process.
  • Support staff and/or supervisor must work with student for any proceedings with the student’s internship course requirements, if applicable (e.g. evaluations, weekly reports, etc.). Note: A student is not required to complete academic credit for participation in the SEI program, however, they may choose to do so based on their academic interests.   
  • Support staff and/or supervisor must ensure the hired SEI completes all required leadership activitiesand attends events necessary of the program.   
  • Support staff and/or supervisor must review student working hours ensuring they complete their timecard in a timely manner.
  • Supervisor must evaluate the student’s performance through a post-experience survey.
  • Departments with strong leadership, a positive and inclusive culture, and dynamic roles with a clear trajectory for growth.
  • Must be a college or department of the University.
  • Diverse industries including technology, research, biomedicine, business, sustainability, and more.
  • Instead of coming up with a general job description, present a project or multiple projects. Determine what your prospective intern should be interested in and what they should excel at.
  • Develop a thoughtful on-boarding process, including a mini orientation session where you set goals and expectations. Include a 3-5 minute overview of different parts of the organization, with a representative from each department or area.
  • Provide a healthy culture and immerse them into the camaraderie of what it takes to work productively and comfortably in an office or at a worksite.
  • Have biweekly 1:1 meetings with your intern to discuss progress on projects they've been working on, areas of the organization that are interesting to them, personal aspirations for growth, and recapping previous goals.

Supervisor Handbook

The SEI Supervisor Handbook was developed to educate faculty and staff on program requirements, expectations, and serve as an internship toolkit. This handbook will provide you with the stages of SEI development and recruitment.

SEI Request Form (For Supervisors)

NOTE: One Form Submission Per Each Request (up to 2 requests maximum).

The Student Experience Internship (SEI) Program pays 100% of the student employee wages and the pay rate is $12.00 per hour. Students are employed for a maximum of 19 hours per week in a job related to their major.

All SEI Positions will be classified as Direct Wage by selecting "Student Experience Internship (SEI) with the Job Code #10065.
