What inspired you to become a doctor?
As a first-generation medical student, I drew inspiration from the role models in my community. My parents immersed me in many summer and weekend programs along a spectrum of professions. Medicine was the one thing that stood out to me the most. It integrated my love and curiosity of the human body with my interests in community engagement and health equity. I was fortunate to have several mentors and family friends who provided insight into their pivotal role as minorities in medicine. Furthermore, my affirming experiences with physicians when my family members faced life-changing medical situations gave me the confidence to pursue this journey.
Why did you choose the UTRGV School of Medicine?
UTRGV’s mission to provide accessible and quality care to underserved communities aligns with my beliefs and goals as a soon-to-be physician. My undergraduate institution (Xavier University of Louisiana. GO RUSH!) instilled the importance of bridging the gap of injustice where we see room for improvement. I chose UTRGV to train physicians with the tenacity to make a difference and advance the field in a growing region rich in culture.
The UTRGV School of Medicine is a practicing academic medical institution. What aspect of Academic Medicine impacts you the most? (Educational, clinical, research, etc.)
I am very involved in the Student Government Association and serve as a member of the central curricular authority committee. It is an honor to be in the room where it happens and contribute to decisions that better develop our future leaders.
What specialties of medicine or research interest you the most? Why?
I am interested in Anesthesiology. My third year of medical school solidified my love for the OR and appreciation for the specialty. Although their role in patient interaction is limited during surgical care, their attention to detail, immense empathy, and vast knowledge of pharmacology and procedures inspired me to pursue this career.
