UTRGV hosted the first HESTEC GreenPowerUSA South Texas Electric Car Competition, held April 6-7 at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport. Thirty one teams representing middle school, high school and colleges from across South Texas competed in the competition, which delivered the excitement of motorsport to inspire students to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) studies. Brownsville, Texas – UTRGV hosted the first HESTEC GreenPowerUSA South Texas Electric Car Competition, held at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport on April 6-7.
Thirty one teams representing middle school, high school and colleges from across South Texas competed in the competition, which delivered the excitement of motorsport to inspire students to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) studies.

Middle School Division
1st place - Oliveira Middle School, Brownsville.
2nd place - Garcia Middle School, Brownsville.
3rd place - Stillman Middle School, Brownsville.
High School Division
1st place - Lamar Academy, McAllen.
2nd place - Harlingen High School.
3rd place - San Benito High School (Boys team).
College Division
1st place – University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
2nd place - Texas A&M Kingsville.
3rd place - Texas A&M International University.
The competition started Friday with some test runs, and moved to the former Confederate Air Force hangar for the medals ceremony and to show their participation in the creation of their team vehicle.
Each student was presented with an inaugural medal for participating in this first ever event.
Veronica Gonzales, UTRGV vice president for Governmental and Community Relations, said UTRGV’s first Electric Car Challenge was a huge success.
“We are so proud of all the students who competed, and their teachers and professors who helped them prepare for this competition,” she said. “We are grateful for the support of our generous sponsors, partners and volunteers in helping us bring this program that engages students in STEM.”

ABOUT UTRGV
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.
UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.
