D2L Brightspace, UTRGV’s New LMS, Starting in Summer 2025.
UTRGV will be transitioning to Brightspace, a robust and user-friendly learning management system (LMS), over the course of the next academic year. To prepare for the Summer 2025 full launch of all courses in Brightspace, our implementation planning team will be working closely with the colleges and schools to ensure a smooth transition for faculty and students.
Why Brightspace?
As part of a thorough review process, Brightspace was carefully evaluated by faculty and other key stakeholders and was selected for its outstanding features and functionality, as well as its widespread adoption by other prominent universities, such as Purdue, the SUNY (State University of New York) system, and the University of Southern California.
Goals
The transition to UTRGV’s new LMS, Brightspace, will strengthen our educational programs and will improve the learning on our campuses and within our virtual learning environments.
We intend to build a Learning Management System through Brightspace that will:
- Leverage the opportunity of the transition to participate in a meaningful shaping of what we want learning to look like in the next few years at UTRGV.
- Utilize LMS features and functionality to support student success inside (and beyond) the classroom.
- Support faculty in their continued growth and development as educators.
- Substantially improve the LMS user experience (students and faculty) so that teaching and learning can be more effective and efficient.
- Define what an effective course looks like in different modalities and for different learning contexts (discipline, level, academic course, professional development, etc.)

What success looks like:
- All stakeholders feel supported through the transition and feel confident about their ability to use Brightspace to meet their needs upon launch.
- Faculty utilize new features & functionality to improve the learning experience for students.
- Students are able to move from one course to the next in the LMS with less cognitive dissonance.
- Stakeholders have access to and use LMS data to inform learning, decision-making, and continued growth and development.
- We utilize LMS features & functionality to humanize the experience of learning.
