Message from the Provost: CLA Interim Dean Announcement

I am pleased to appoint Dr. Jose Davila-Montes as the Interim Dean for the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), effective June 1, 2024.

As you may know, Dr. Davila-Montes is a Professor of Translation and Interpreting in the Department of Writing and Language Studies and has served the college as the Associate Dean for Assessment since 2021.

He holds BA, MA, and PhD degrees in Translation and Cross-Cultural Studies, as well as an MA in Spanish Literature. His diverse background includes educational stops at Barcelona Autonomous University (Barcelona, Spain), Dublin City University (Dublin, Ireland), Toyo University (Tokyo, Japan), and the State University of New York at Binghamton (New York).

In his role as Associate Dean, Dr. Davila-Montes has played an invaluable role in the success of CLA and UTRGV, supervising the assessment of CLA’s 50+ academic programs (one third of all academic program assessment at UTRGV).

He has also served as a Faculty Fellow for Assessment, working with UTRGV’s Office of Curriculum and Institutional Assessment to further develop and conduct assessment activities for all programs, university-wide.

In 2005, Dr. Davila-Montes founded the first full-fledged BA program in Spanish Translation and Interpretation in the State of Texas, along with the predecessor to the current Translation and Interpretation Office at UTRGV. Soon after, he also had the privilege of founding the first fully online MA program in Spanish Translation and Interpreting in the nation (2010).

As a respected researcher, Dr. Davila-Montes has authored or co-authored 20 peer-reviewed articles, chapters or books on translation studies, translation pedagogy, and Spanish contemporary literature and culture. His current research interests revolve around the neuroscience of rhetoric and its impingement in the translation of persuasive texts.

We will soon begin a national search to identify the next Dean for the College of Liberal Arts and I encourage each of you to be active participants as the search progresses.

Please help me to welcome Dr. Davila-Montes to this new role and thank you for all you do for our students and UTRGV,

Luis H. Zayas, PhD

Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
